60 Years of Leoti Rodeo History The Leoti Rodeo Club was started in 1947. The first rodeo was held that same year during the Fair. The original members were Bill Barr, Don Lee, Ray Smith, Harold Smith, Mac Basham and George Gilmore. These men went out on a limb to start something which has lasted 60 years. They had no guarantee that the rodeo would pay for itself then, just as the club has no guarantee today. The Leoti Rodeo Club sill puts on the rodeo in much the same manner. In 1954, the Leoti Rodeo Club held its first American Quarter Horse Show. The show was held on Monday, the first day of the Fair, and was an important part of the fair for many years. Bill Barr was the chairman for the Quarter Horse Show in the beginning. Lorene Giesick, Allen Barr and Eleanor Hooker provided the office help. The last Quarter Horse Show was held in July of 1983. The rodeo was held in four different locations around Leoti before the preset day arena was built in 1965. The labor and materials were donated by the Rodeo Club and the Rough Riders Saddle Club. The chief engineer of this project was Paul Hudson, who devoted a lot of time to the upkeep and maintenance of the rodeo grounds.
